Book Test

REASON FOR TESTING OF BLOOD SUGAR

Patient with symptoms of high glucose levels (Hyperglycaemia) such as:

  • frequent urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Repeated infections
  • Delay in wound healing

Patient with symptoms of low glucose levels (Hypoglycaemia) such as:

  • Hunger
  • Trembling
  • Spontaneous sweating
  • Anxiety

Patients with predisposing factors

  • Obese
  • Hypertensive
  • 1st degree relative of diabetics
  • Pregnancy ( Gestational Diabetes Mellitus )
  • Woman who gave birth to overweight baby in previous pregnancy
  • History of cardiovascular disease

Apart from the above examples blood sugar testing is routinely done in case of known Diabetics, in whose case blood sugar testing is done to monitor the therapy response.

WHAT IS BEING TESTED IN BLOOD SUGAR

Blood sugar fasting -done on overnight fasting of 8 to 10 hours

Blood sugar post meal -done 2 hour post meal

Blood sugar random-at any time of day

2 hour oral GTT (Glucose tolerance test)-After getting Fasting sugar level, patient consume 75 gm of glucose dissolved in water. After 2 hours again glucose levels are measured.

3 hour oral GTT (Glucose tolerance test)-This is done when 2 hour GTT is done and abnormal values are obtained. After a woman's fasting glucose level is measured, she is given a 100-gram glucose dose and her glucose is measured at timed intervals. If at least two of the glucose levels at fasting, 1 hour, 2 hour, or 3 hour are above a certain level, then a diagnosis of gestational diabetes is made.

INTERPRETATION OF BLOOD SUGAR TEST RESULT

Fasting blood glucose

70 to 99 mg/dL - Normal fasting glucose

100 to 125 mg/dL - Normal fasting glucose

126 mg/dL and above - Diabetes

2 hour oral GTT (Glucose tolerance test)

Less than 140 mg/dL - Normal glucose tolerance

From 140 to 199 mg/dL - Prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance)

Equal to or greater than 200 mg/dL - Diabetes

BLOOD SUGAR REFERENCE RANGE

Fasting Blood glucose - Less than or equal to 100 mg/dL

2 hour post meal - Less than 140 mg/dL

Random - 80 -120 mg/dL levels vary depending on when and how much you ate at your last meal.
